BBFC advice: Contains brief moderate violence
The brilliant Ashes test at Trent Bridge was drawing to its fascinating conclusion and I imagined sitting of the sofa with a few cans to take it in.
But, no, Mrs W and I were in fiercely air-conditioned screen 1 at Bradford Cineworld for a Punjabi comedy.
Regular readers will know that I haven't been a big fan of the genre, largely because I miss the cultural references.
It transpires that I am quite a way ahead of Mrs W who was left scratching her head at Rimpy Prince and Harpreet Singh's movie.
In saying that, I wasn't tuned into Fer Mamla Gadbad Gadbad enough for it to elicit more than a couple of chuckles and I will never understanding all the slapping which happens in virtually every Indian movie.
But it was a comedy which, I am sure, will tickle the funny bones of many of its more traditional audience members.
The biggest problem was that at 139 minutes plus intermission it is way too long.
Its storyline surrounds a con artist (Roshan Prince) who is paid to lie in divorce cases and at weddings to split couples' up.
In one such incident, the son of a local mobster is about to see his love being snatched away at an arranged marriage.
Prince's character (Jazzi) goes along and claims, falsely, that the bride-to-be, Geet (Japji Kaira), has been having an affair with him.
This makes her groom run for the hills, so the local village head demands that Jazzi and Geet wed instead.
Thus, the conman gets his comeuppance because he is already in love with a doctor (Banushree Mehra).
The comedy surrounds the farce which is then pursued in an attempt to put matters straight.
As is so common with Indian films, family and, in particular the relationship between fathers and their children, is to the fore.
Typically, there are numerous scenarios involving weddings and misunderstandings galore.
Prince is a decent comic lead, showing plenty of energy, while his leading ladies have a smashing feistiness.
I quite enjoyed Fer Mamla Gadbad Gadbad but would have done much more if it had not been so long.
Laughs: a couple of chuckles.
