PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS

BBFC advice: Contains moderate fantasy violence and threat and mild language
On a wall in our house is a signed photograph of Ray Harryhausen with some of his famous models.
Harryhausen, who died a little while ago, was the genius who created the characters in Jason And The Argonauts.
To those of us of a certain age, this was an iconic film of our childhood. Its special effects, which seem so tame by today's standards, had a huge wow factor back then.
Nowadays, the world of cinema is reliant on CGI - even when it comes to rescuing the golden fleece as Jason did back in the day.
This time the fleece is the goal of Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), the modern day son of Poseidon, and his pals, fellow half-bloods Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), Clarisse (Leven Rambin), Tyson (Douglas Smith) and Grover (Brandon T Jackson).
The action catches up with the crowd after the unexpectedly exciting Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief.
Sadly, this doesn't have the same sparkle.
It joins Percy at a force-field defended camp for the offspring of the Gods.
However, the action starts when the wall is broken down by a gang who are hellbent in killing the good guys.
This precipitates a dangerous trip across sea to grab the fleece, which will apparently put things back into their rightful order. The problem is that it is in the custody of an unfriendly giant cyclops.
Don't worry, the plot is not as complicated as it sounds and I'm sure under-12s will enjoy the many battle scenes which mix a bit of comedy with some Harry Potter-esque fighting.
Anyone older will pick up on the fact that Lerman seems to have lost the zest he had in the original and the rest of the cast have followed him into the land of the monotone.
Thor (apt name) Freudenthal's film wasn't bad but to quote the language of young people nowadays, it just left me feeling a bit 'meh'.
