AFTERNOON DELIGHT
Cert 18
94 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong sex, sex references and very strong language
Ok, let's be honest: do you know a married mum would bring home a stripper to enliven her humdrum life?
And by stripper, I mean a young and attractive female lap dancer as opposed to the Chippendale variety.
Thought not. Nevertheless, this is the premise of Jill Soloway's raunchy black comedy, starring Kathryn Hahn.
Hahn plays Rachel, a stay-at-home mum whose sexless marriage is drifting passionlessly and who is fed up of the round of school runs and therapy appointments.
But her life is changed when her best friend (Jessica St Clair) confesses that her sex life was pepped up when she visited a lap-dancing club with her husband.
At first, Rachel is very reticent but a light sparkles in her head when her husband pays for HER to be taken into a dark room with goodtime girl McKenna (Juno Temple).
Thereafter, Rachel becomes dangerously obsessed with McKenna's edgy lifestyle.
Afternoon Delight's premise is probably a bit far-fetched but, while I wasn't particularly impressed with its attempted pathos, it did make me laugh.
Hahn shows suitable levels of anxiety in the lead role while Temple is splendidly devil-may-care as her polar opposite.
And there is an offbeat cameo by the ever hilarious Jane Lynch as a therapist.
Laughs: three
Jumps: none
Vomit: yes
Nudity: yes
Overall rating: 7/10
