THE FOLD
Cert 15
87 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong sex, threat, strong language and self-harm theme
During the course of a year, I come across several movies which concentrate on a particular geographical part of Britain.
The Fold was sent to me by Lee Trewhela, entertainments writer for newspapers in Cornwall where its story is centred.
It fact, when it was first released it was only listed at cinemas in the county.
I digress. On a remote coastal area a plot develops around a recently bereaved mother (Catherine McCormack) and an equally vulnerable eastern European girl (Marina Stoimenova).
McCormack's character, Rebecca, has been given the job of the local vicar in the wake of her daughter's death.
However, there is little to do because the congregation is very small and she is not welcome by the locals to immerse herself in community affairs.
However, she is drawn to a small group of hippies and, in particular, a feisty Bulgarian.
The relationship between the pair becomes one of high dependency, fed by jealousy and questionable motives.
The Fold is a low-budget film which is well acted and interesting. It boasts stunning scenery and a vibrant soundtrack.
It is an impressive feature debut for director John Jencks
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: yes, very briefly
Overall rating: 6.5/10
