THE QUIET ONES
Cert 15
96 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong horror
Here's a novelty - a film about the supernatural which isn't based on supposed found footage.
Mind you, The Quiet Ones does go down one well-established path by claiming to be based on a true story.
Ahem... to say that it is 'loosely' based is the understatement of the year.
For starters, John Pogue's movie is set in Oxford whereas the real Philip experiment took place in Toronto.
And while there is an entire ocean between the geography of actuality and adaptation, there are similar huge differences between the plot of the film and history.
Nevertheless, while not being a classic, The Quiet Ones is one of the better horrors of the year.
It surrounds the attempt by an Oxford University professor (Jared Harris) and a team of students to cure a young woman (Olivia Cooke) who is possessed by a malevolent spirit.
Sure enough, there are the horror movie regulars: a gravelly voice, ectoplasm, spurting blood, crazy recordings and an evil doll.
But, while the script is a bit hackneyed, it scores in one crucial area - it made me jump.
In fact, three big leaps and a sprinkling of jolts which had more to do with the director's sense of timing than the storyline or great acting.
But if you want to be shocked out of your seat or are in need of an increased heart rate, this may fit the bill.
And, being set in 1972 adds to the eeriness and prompts the obvious comparison with The Exorcist.
Laughs: none
Jumps: three
Vomit: none
Nudity: I didn't see any but the BBFC says there are 'brief scenes of nudity'
Overall rating: 6/10
