HEAVEN IS FOR REAL

BBFC advice: Contains brief sight of injury
Crikey, I am the wrong person to be reviewing movies about religion.
Yet, because watching 'every' film is part of my challenge, I joined two other people in screen 10 of Nottingham Showcase for the Saturday afternoon screening of Randall Wallace's Heaven Is For Real.
This is the 'true' story of Colton Burpo, who, when he was four years old, visited heaven during life-saving surgery.
For me, as a non-believer, heaven is nothing but a fairytale, however, Wallace's film attempts to prove otherwise.
Heaven Is For Real is based on a book by Todd Burpo, a pastor at Nebraskan Wesleyan church, played by Greg Kinnear.
Burpo is a pillar of the community, carpet-fitter by trade, retained fireman and devoted father-of-two beautiful children (Conor Corum and Lane Styles) with a perfect wife (Kelly Reilly).
But the family had already suffered one tragedy when a baby was stillborn before Colton suffered a burst appendix.
He survived but then went on to tell of his trip to heaven during his time in hospital.
This was seen as evidence of its existence because he described people he could not have possibly known and witnessed scenes which were happening when he was under anesthetic.
Obviously, I can't explain that but neither do I know enough about the case to poke holes in it.
What I would say is that Wallace's film will not win over a single sceptic. It is far too twee and demands so little from a talented cast.
In fact, it comes from the Christian stable of God Isn't Dead which was released a short time ago. It may appeal to religious devotees but has no chance of convincing an agnostic or atheist.
So, in my view, it fails as a film and a propaganda exercise.
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: yes
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 4/10
