PREDESTINATION
Cert 15
95 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong violence, sex, strong language
I love the quote from Ethan Hawke in which he says that anyone who knows what Predestination is about is lying.
And yet, it grabbed me and Mrs W in the same way that Inception did a few years ago.
What I can say for sure, is that Predestination is an Aussie-made sci-fi movie, co-written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig.
It stars Hawke as a time-travelling secret agent who goes back in time in an attempt to stop atrocities carried out by the absurdly named but apparently very dangerous Fizzle Bomber.
In the opening scenes, Hawke's character is given a new face after an assignment culminates with him being terribly badly burned.
After his recovery. he goes back in time to become a 1970s bartender who is told an incredible story by one of his customers (Sarah Snook).
And so starts the evolution of a film which twists and turns more dramatically than any I have seen in a very long time.
This culminates in an ending which had Mrs W and me both open-mouthed but also scratching our heads.
No description of Predestination can possibly be good enough so I recommend that you try to see it. And please tell me if you understand it.
Ethan Hawke: "Anyone who tells you they know what Predestination is about is lying."
Reasons to watch: Fascinating concept which brings surprise after surprise.
Reasons to avoid: So complex that not even now do I think I understand it.
Laughs: none
Jumps: one
Vomit: none
Nudity: yes
Overall rating: 7.5/10
