KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER
Cert 12A
105 mins
BBFC advice: Contains occasional bloody images

Here's another movie which has been critically acclaimed but will probably not make much of an impact at the box office.
And there is a good reason for the latter: Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter may have an interesting concept but it is just too slow in its execution.
In my opinion, the camera lingers too long over it central character and the surroundings in which she finds herself.
Nevertheless, I totally accept that at the heart of David Zellner's picture is an impressive performance by Rinko Kikuchi.
She plays Kumiko, a loner who has a hum-drum job which she loathes and has no friends but prefers to live alone, away from her domineering mother.
She is desperate for a big break to take her away from the monotony but cannot find one.
So, she becomes obsessed with the Coen Bothers' film Fargo and believes that the money, hidden by Steve Buscemi's character, is real.
This would seem a crazy storyline if it didn't have a grain of truth.
In 2001, a depressed office worker called Takako Konishi left Toyko for Minnesota and an urban legend has grown up around her attempt to find the Fargo money,
The whole story surrounding Konishi is subject to much speculation and, therefore, Zellner's movie is a mix of fact and fiction and is made with more than a hint of the Coen Brothers' style.
Thus, their fans and, in particular, those of Fargo, will probably enjoy this.
My problem was that Kumiko's fascination with the Fargo story is easily the most interesting thing about her.
She may be desperate or may even have mental health issues but there is only a superficial exploration of both.

David Zellner, director and co-writer: "The urban legend is what drew is to it in the first place. We liked the way the story had a blurred reality between fact and fiction."

Reasons to watch: Original, pretty and splendidly acted. Advantage if you are a Fargo fan.
Reasons to avoid: Too many scenes where the camera lingers without any obvious purpose

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
