BBFC advice: Contains strong language

Hinterland is one of those fripperies which is so popular in French cinema. So its rather a surprise that it is a British movie.
Many will enjoy the Harry Met Sally-style relationship between Harvey (director Harry MacQueen) and Lola (singer-songwriter Lori Campbell).
They will also let the beautiful Cornish countryside lap over them.
And they will admire the fact that, while much of the dialogue had been written in advance, there are chunks of seamless improvisation.
They would be correct. All of the above has helped Hinterland to considerable acclaim on the indie circuit.
However, while young romantics will go for the "will they, won't they?" storyline, it just didn't grab me as much as I might have hoped, largely because nothing much happens.
We learn that Harvey and Lola have been close childhood friends and meet up for the first time in ages to go on a road trip which sparks memories of the past.
And it is soon clear that Harvey is besotted with the seemingly oblivious Lola.
But that's about it. They talk, they drive, they sing and they have a bath.
Its many advocates would say I am as shallow as a puddle but I just need a bit more from my movies.
That said, I do recognise the directing talents of MacQueen who has achieved much in grabbing such approval for a low-budget first-time feature.

Director Harry MacQueen: "It's a road trip of sorts: an intimate exploration of an old friendship. The idea was to rely on a lot of improvisation."

Reasons to watch: A quiet romance amid beautiful scenery
