BBFC advice: TBA

I know that the everyfilm quest is over-ambitious because it takes in movies which are well out of the mainstream.
But if I just reviewed multiplex releases I would only be offering the same as hundreds of thousands of other writers.
I also think I should play my small part in encouraging different types of cinema and new film-makerss
Thus, I was delighted to be given access to a couple of movies which are part of the Polish Kinoteka film festival which is touring the UK over the next month or so.
First up was Kryzstof Zanussi's rather interesting Foreign Body which throw religion, gender and corporate ruthlessness into the melting pot.
It stars Agata Buzek who, for reasons which are never made clear, decides to dump her handsome Italian boyfriend (Riccardo Leonelli) and become a nun.
He refuses to accept her decision and moves to Warsaw to be nearby in the event that she changes her mind.
In the meantime, he takes up a job a job at an energy company and becomes exploited by his boss (Agnieszka Grochowska) who takes perverse pleasure from making his life as uncomfortable as possible.
The contrast of the boss and the nun is stark but the common factor is the strength of their convictions.
Chucked into the ring is a battle for supremacy at the energy company and the chequered family past of Grochowska's character.
It amounts to a film which probably tries to cover too much ground in its two hours. Nevertheless, it has intrigue and passion and I was particular impressed by Grochowska's portrayal of a woman who is both villainous and vulnerable.

Director Kryzstof Zanussi: "The film shows the clash between corporate cynicism and youthful idealism. The perversity of the idea is based on the fact that the persecuted person is a genuine Christian, while, on the other side, we have liberated women whose cynicism and brutality of conduct surpasses that of men."
