THE DORKELS (MANGE TES MORTS)
Cert 15
99 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong language, sex references
Everyfilm is bulging with curiosities but none more so than this drama which stars real-life gypsies.
The Dorkels are an actual family but this is not a documentary despite having the feel of one.
Instead, they are directed by Jean-Charles Hue who is also from travelling stock.
Hue admits that his charges were not the easiest to command because they often dissented and had fall-outs among themselves.
It is all the more remarkable, therefore, that he was able to create a coherent movie.
The Dorkels actually seem quite a docile bunch for the first part of the picture as 18-year-old Jason prepares for his baptism.
And then the world is turned on its head by the arrival from a long prison stretch of his half-brother Fred.
Frankly, Fred is the type of character most of us would cross the street to avoid.
He couldn't care less who he upsets or which laws he breaks and those who follow him are scared of the consequences if they don't.
Thus, a short time after his release he is causing mayhem both within the gypsy community and outside of it.
The Dorkels isn't the easiest watch because it is rather chaotic but it is also original and the selection of its erratic cast is a masterstroke.

Director Jean-Charles Hue: "The project almost ground to a halt on multiple occasions. There were fights, car chases...As actors go, they're not exactly docile."
