RAJINI MURUGAN

BBFC advice: Infrequent moderate violence
Leicester tends to have something of a hoodoo over the everyfilm challenge.
In the past I have been caught speeding because I was late for the start of a movie and a few years back I missed a picture because those who were running the Piccadilly Cinema refused to put it on because I was the only one who had arrived to watch it.
The jinx looked as if it had struck again on Sunday when roadworks caused me to be late to Piccadilly for the mid-day screening of Malayalam film Adi Kapyare Kootamani.
Even worse, I was then told the movie was running without subtitles even though they had been present at other UK screenings.
Undaunted, I turned to Ponram's much-delayed Tamil comedy Rajini Murugan.
Sadly, however, the film didn't resonate with me as much as other movies from India since the turn of the year.
To be fair, this type of mapcap humour doesn't usually rock my boat in English and, inevitably, a few of the gags were lost in the cultural vacuum. And I ought to point ought those in the audience who understand the language were having a right good giggle.
That said, Rajini Murugan does have verve and is awash with vibrant colours.
The films stars Sivakarthikeyan, a loafer with a good heart who goes nowhere without his sidekick (Soori).
Keerthy Suresh plays the girl he wants to marry but a combination of her dad's nonacceptance and his own buffoonery stand in Rajini's way.
In the meantime, his grandfather becomes hotly embroiled in a row with a local thug (Samuthirakani) To be fair, the movie grabs more as it goes on - in particular, during the second half because there is less drawn-out silliness.
And the song and dance routines are probably among the more zestful I have seen in Tamil movies.
Reasons to watch: Its vibrancy and colour
Reasons to avoid: Its storyline is too flimsy
Laughs: a couple of chuckles for me but laughs out loud for others in the audience
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 5/10
