SETHUPATHI
Cert 15
122 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong violence
Here is a refreshing change - a movie which portrays an Indian policeman who is not corrupt.
Not since Singham, have I watched such an energetic and virtuous cop as Sethupathi, played, rather confusingly by Vijay Sethupathi.
Here is a guy who is prepared to take on the bad guys singlehandedly, whatever the risks.
And it turns out that there are plenty. The criminals in this movie specialise in burning police officers alive!
Tamil thrillers tend to have a harder edge than those from elsewhere in India and that is again the case here.
Early on, a police officer is brutally killed and Sethupathi sets about trying to find the motive and, ultimately, his murderers
What he discovers is a web which leads back to a ruthless gangster (Vela Ramamoorthy) who will stop at nothing to keep his hold over the community.
The battle between the police officer and powerful villain is engrossing with both Vijay and Vela exploiting their considerable screen presence.
Meanwhile, the violence, which is tough even by Western standards, might be hard to take for Indian audiences.
Nevertheless, S.U. Aran Kumar's movie kept the action flowing from its opening scenes right until the end and Vijay makes a hero that audiences would want on their side,
Reasons to watch: hard-hitting thriller
Reasons to avoid: the violence is stronger than in many Indian movies
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 7.5/10
